This “Island Retreat” original, hand-made painting captures the serene solitude of Plaka beach on Naxos as I walked towards the village of Mikri Vigla. I visited the island for a photography and Plein Air painting trip.
In this piece, a simple stone house is perched on a sun-warmed hillside overlooking the Aegean sea. I created a gentle path from the dwelling down to the shore, where I imagined a quiet morning ritual of bringing an Americano coffee down to the water’s edge. What a way to start the day! The vast, empty horizon, tranquil water, and barely inhabited landscape capture the profound peace of this remote corner of Naxos. I wanted to create a painting where the viewer could imagine themselves escaping from a more hectic world.
