Koufonasia is celebrated as one of Greece's prettiest islands. In this painting I tried to capture its awe-inspiring shallow harbour with breathtaking crystal-clear waters. The sea really is this blue! The island is a short ferry ride from Naxos, where I took a day trip in the intense heat of a Greek summer. I used artistic license to transform a traditional whitewashed building into a chapel by adding two crosses on top. The lone building nestles against the rocky shore, while a solitary fishing boat floats peacefully in the foreground. I hope this painting conveys the serene beauty of this remote island, and transports the viewer to an idyllic world.
