I created a gentle path from the dwelling down to the shore, where I imagined a quiet morning ritual of bringing an Americano coffee down to the water’s edge. What a way to start the day! The vast, empty horizon, tranquil water, and barely inhabited landscape capture the profound peace of this remote corner of Naxos. In this painting I tried to capture its awe-inspiring shallow harbour with breathtaking crystal-clear waters. The sea really is this blue! The island is a short ferry ride from Naxos, where I took a day trip in the intense heat of a Greek summer. I used artistic license to transform a traditional whitewashed building into a chapel by adding two crosses on top. The lone building nestles against the rocky shore, while a solitary fishing boat floats peacefully in the foreground. This village is located between the main town of Naxos Chora, and the beach town of Agios Prokopios. While I didn’t have the luxury of staying here, it was a beautiful (but hot!) hike through this hillside community, which offers sweeping views of the sea and terraced landscapes. You can take the train here and spend the day walking the village, or enjoying the beaches and cafes on the waterfront. This painting is very similar to the actual building and street corner, and you could likely find it yourself on a fun exploratory walk! The painting highlights the sustainable shared-wall architecture ubiquitous in Italy, which helps reduce building supply requirements, and encourages thermal heating. Additionally, the warm sunset hues demonstrate the uniform building color schemes legislated in many Italian villages, which bring a unique ambience to each community.
